Choose from a course in either modern or traditional upholstery courses. To suit all levels, we have developed structured courses that will help you understand the basics of upholstery.
A modern upholstery course teaches you a fast paced way of learning to upholster using the latest techniques. On a modern upholstery course you will learn how to use a pneumatic staple gun, use stretch elastic webbings, use edge roll & understand which foam to use & how to use it to suit the furniture you are working on.
A traditional upholstery course uses natural organic materials such as horsehair & coconut fiber, hessian & learning to use tacks for fixing. It can also involve learning a sophisticated stitching technique to make firm stitched edges. It is more time consuming & labor intensive, but involves real manual skill.
With only 5 people per course & taught in a live functioning upholstery workshop & showroom, the amount & quality of the tuition you receive individually is exceptional & geared to your needs.
TOOLS: During the course each student is supplied with all the commonly used upholstery tools which include the use of a pneumatic staple gun. Safety gear including ear protection & masks will also be provided. After the course we can provide help & advise on purchasing your own collection of upholstery tools.
FABRICS: If you have your own fabrics then bring them along, if you’re unsure on fabric quantity then give us a call. We also stock a large range of ready to use fabric for you to buy in our showroom which includes a collection of linen, silk, velvet, printed fabrics & more.
We also ask that you bring with you a camera to help you record visually all the stages of upholstery. We will provide you with a course pamphlet & information for you to take home.
On the course as a beginner upholsterer you learn the basic principles of upholstery depending on the furniture; stripping back, webbing, cutting foam & recovering. In addition you will examine fabrics, practice measuring up & cutting out your fabric on the cutting table.
You will need to bring along a piece of furniture with you to work on, we suggest you bring a chair with a fixed upholstery top, drop-in-seat or stool. We will ask you to send us a picture of the desired pieces of furniture you wish to work on to assess whether we think it’s a suitable choice.
If you do not have a piece of furniture suitable we can provide you with a furniture frames for you to work on from a range of modern, classic & period styles which vary in price (from $80 – $320 each) that you will take away with you at the end of the day. We will send you a catalogue of furniture specific to the course to choose from. The furniture frames will NOT be stained or painted but we can arrange to have this done for you by our wood finisher at an extra cost of $100 if you desire.
Please note: If your piece of furniture is more complicated than the recommended stated, it may take you more than one course day to finish. Please send us a picture of your furniture to discuss its suitability.
